Global data protection authorities met on 23rd June in Seoul to discuss the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) to data protection and privacy, and explored possible avenues of international coordination and cooperation in responding to these challenges.

The conference, which was hosted by Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) under the title “AI and Data Privacy: Tackling Newly Emerging Challenges,” brought together delegates from data protection authorities and international entities of European and Asian countries, as well as representatives from global technology companies and academia, for an opportunity to exchange views and to consider new proposals in order to remain attentive to newly emerging and pressing topics related to AI.

Ulrich Kelber (Commissioner, Federal Commission for Data Protection and Freedom of Information): “Any AI regulation should require transparency for AI systems. Transparency is essential to ensure the protection of fundamental rights and democratic control. Additionally, affected persons should have the possibility to defend themselves against discrimination by AI systems. AI legislation should provide for complaint mechanisms and the possibility to take appropriate legal action. For the fundamental rights compliant development and use of AI systems, it is crucial to have clear accountability.”

Haksoo Ko (Chairperson, Personal Information Protection Commission, Korea): “This is a rare occasion for various stakeholders to discuss the status of AI regulation and policy directions of the future. Staying on top of current situations, and keeping others in the know, may be a good starting point for continuing the dialogue, which, in turn, may lead to forming of a multi-institutional forum for exploring future policy options for privacy and data protection."
